What, you mean when foreign athletes won every year? The event isn't exactly historic in the American professional calendar.
There is little overlap for anyone with ambitions in cross country (USA Champs, or even Club Championships) to focus on this race. It fills its role well though, for local and regional athletes to change it up after a fall road season or before a winter/spring track build.
We've seen Ritz and Simpson head to Italy (Campaccio) to prep for US championships. But Mayor's cup, and the USATF champs are too disjointed for anyone to string them together with intention. Same with Club XC championships: we've seen BTC, Brooks-Hansons, BAA women, etc. take them seriously. But again, it is a single event that is too long from any others to string into a season.
