He's a high end middle distance runner who does 40 mpw. If he tried to train for the marathon for a year, what could he run? What could he run off of just 800m training? Discuss.

LOL. I would say more like 2:50
Nick runs more than 40 mpw most of the year. I'll guess 2:30-2:40
1:42
If he trained for it, 2:25 no problem. At least. 2:20 wouldn't surprise me, especially if he cut out 10+ pounds of upper body muscle. The guy has run 3:34 for 1500 and used to be a solid XC runner before switching to middle distance. He runs relatively high mileage for an 800 guy, peaking at 70 mpw during base phase with 13-14 mi long runs.
He has 5k PR of 1546 and ran 35(?) at club cross 10k last year. 2:50-3 on his best day.
he would run his mouth
What not just write 'off 800m training'. The extra 'of' us not needed as is this question.

Only on letsrun will hobbyists claim almost daily that they can run 2:45 while
"Practically jogging." But a professional mid D guy could barely manage sub 3?
With no deviation from his training he could run 2:25
With marathon focus... 2:18

Well, most people on Letsrun also claim to make 200k/year and being married to models.
DNF
In all seriousness, absolutely no freaking way he runs 2:20-2:25. I'd be surprised if he broke 2:40. The guys is an 800m runner through and through. Even jumping up to the 1500 he drops off significantly and at 3K (the one he's ran) he's a joke. He does not have the endurance to run a good marathon.

Right you are. He has a backlog of 15 years of hard training to build off of.

No way, he's too fat
Liam Boylan-Pett just ran 2:30. He was a pretty prominent 800/1500 guy, albeit not at Symmonds' level. I would think Symmonds could run something similar.
TrackBot! VDOT 1:42 800
High schoolers run 3:00 having only run 16:40 for xc. Symmonds could run 2:30 at the very least
