Hello all I have a question regarding posterior shin splint pain and wether or not I should stop training. To sum up my situation I leave for Military Basic Training in 5 weeks and I have a special forces contract. My fitness level is currently around a 20 min 5k when it comes to running and to have a good chance at making it i need between an 18-19 min so stopping training really isnt an option. Im in sink or swim mode. As for my shin splints I have had the pain in the same spot in both my legs for about a month now. At first it was off and on some days hurt some didnt then last week it got bad and I started really researching online and have been doing rehab stuff such as RICE when possible and lots of foam rolling stretching and strengthening. I feel it might be getting better but I also feel like the pain is now on the bone a little and not just in the shin muscle. Now I will say that I have not stopped training but I have switched to mostly grass running (like 75% grass the rest road but never a road only run just some parts of my streets have no grass). I do not feel the pain when running only slight discomfort in the begining and it goes away within a mile. However it hurts when I am finished. I feel the pain is excaberated If I press into the ground with my foot using only my toes if that makes sense. If I hop on one leg I feel the pain for a few hops then it goes away. It is likely a 3-4 on a scale of 1-10 but I have a insanley high pain tolerance lvl so my body has lied to me before (played 4 weeks of football with a torn ACL). To clarify the pain is in both shins I feel it in a smallish area of both posterior tibialis muscles (about maybe 2-3 inch area about a third of the way up on both legs) but on my left leg I feel it is also on the bone a little. I know this is a long confusing post but I would like to know if this sounds like a stress fracture. I personally think it is not and could possibly be a stress reaction but the pain is not sharp or burning just shin splint pain and It gets better as I run until i am finished so those are good signs. The bad signs being it hurts a little on the bone and is slightly tender to touch but when I say slightly I really do mean slightly and I really have to press hard to even feel that tenderness. My current gameplan is to continue to run 4 times a week with one of those 4 runs being a recovery run one being a long run one being a tempo run and one being a medium paced 5-10k. If I can maintain this for the next 5 weeks I hope to heal up in basic training as I have been running about 20-25 mpw and I hear the first month of basic you dont even run that much combined so it should be a welcomed rest for my shins. So to finalize I will post some cliffs
Cliffs:
Pain in both Posterior shins gets better during run or rest worst after run
Pain lvl between 2-4
Pain excaberating when pushing foot into ground through topof foot or toes
Pain in left leg radiates to bone but is very slight
Does all of this sound like a stress fracture?
I can pass the hop test it only hurts for like first 2-3 hops then its fine
