Have any legit runners competed at the Barkley Marathons? How fast has the course record holder Brett Maune run for more conventional races, like the marathon or half marathon?

Is that 10K and 5K times, respectively?
On road, or on track?
God the Barkley thing is so gimmicky. Why do people bother?

The Barkley is arguably the most challenging running race on Earth. You think you're good? Well, come run Barkley and see how good you really are. You'll be crying for your mommy.
Barkley doesn't care if you fast. Only about 10% of it is runnable.
Listened to a podcast with (now) 3 time finisher Jared Campbell. He talks about going out from his house near Salt Lake City and training in the snow and mountains in January and February in prep for Barkley. Says it helps him immensely to do training miles at 30 minute miles in the snow, up and down the mountains because it closely mimics race day at Barkley. While all the other people are worried about speed, he knows that doesn't play much of an element out there.

I think it's probably the most challenging RACE but is it a running race or a hiking/navigation race? It's certainly about endurance but a very different kind. I can't imagine even attempting it and I expect that most of the a55holes on here would drop out before completing even a single lap -- but I tend to agree that it's not really a "running" event.
Gimmicky? Sure. So is the Tour de France. So is the Boston Marathon. So is the Daytona 500. And the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. And every other fvcking race or contest, of any type, ever. It's all arbitrary. Who cares.

Thank you for this. There's nothing more gimmicky than running circles around a track. Runners tend to be some of the most pretentious people around.

This reminds me of a competition that happens yearly in San Francisco where guys compete to see who can shove the largest items up their ass. I'm sure it's quite challenging, but so are a lot of things. I pick my challenges. I like running barefoot for example. I'm a barefoot trail runner and I run about 40mpw barefoot. A lot of people would say that's stupid and what's the point. But by the same token there are people who run hundred mile races but couldn't walk around their block barefoot. So go figure.
