In the spirit of fairness and accuracy, it should be revaled that Rob Aubry was a college f***up and the only blame on his failure at the college level should be directed at himself.

Smith was/is a total f***-up! He arrived at Oregon, poised to make some real changes to the distance program, he did (for worse), they now suck (not talking T&F)! Now that he's gone, hopefully Moos pulls his head out of his ass to get someone who will bring O back to a powerhouse level again. Let's leave it at that, jackoffs!

Heard Coach Smith is leaving UO. It will be officially announced tomorrow. If VL didn't/doesn't take the job who will be interim head coach???? Choices are Bill Lawson or Rocky Light.

As a person who does not know Coach Smith very well and could really care less, that is a bunch of crap. Yes I think that Oregon should/could have a coach who is better at coaching distance runners. However he has done what he is payed to do --- win or place high in Track. From what I have heard, Martin Smith works very hard. It is a sad day when people who have no clue what it is like to be a college track and field coach call shots at a hard working person. It will be interesting now that Alberto got his way. Will he take over or will Pay Tyson? Neither have coached a day at the collegiate level, do they know the rules? Al, you can not recruit when kids are in the 10th grade.

It's great that the Associate AD Gary Gray assumes control of the program.

At least they made a good 'Solomon-worthy' decision on this one. The only current coach qualified to be the interim head coach was Coach Light but because he hadn't been there long he probably wouldn't have been considered. Coach Lawson who thought he had the interim head coach's position sewed up has to be in SHOCK. I guess sometimes a person just can't kiss enough asses. Go DUCKS!

Read the bio. It is all stuff I knew already, but he coached National level runners at every stop. Jim Hill (fastest in the nation as a prep), then Lesley Welch at Virginia, plus an NCAA team championship, then Wisco, two FIRSTS, Two SECONDS, three THIRDS.

Why could he not produce the same results at Oregon? I dunno' why am I not good at software development? You can't work miracles. the guys have to WANT IT BAD.

Anyone who thinks he can't coach should think how hard it would be to step in as head coach at Wisconsin after their beloved XC/distance coach Dan McClimon died and Martin had to take over ... a team with nearly ALL Wisconsin and Michigan Natives.

He may have personality problems (I have no idea) but I think he was a great coach.

If you listen carefully, you will hear him getting the last laugh. They are paying him $150,000 a year for the next 4 years, or through 2008.

That will bring him close to 58 years old and he won't have to put up with whiny college pukes any more.

I am shocked. I have to admit I thought Martin Smith was the one man who was tough enough to take on that bullshit and eventually come out on top. But you know what, it just isn't worth it.

He did a fine job. But he doesn't need this shit and now they're going to pay him over $150,000 grand for the next 3 years.

I really think the AD is letting him down and a spineless punk after publicly supporting after all this time. But hey maybe he still does and Martin is fed up with the crap.

But I will always remember this. Martin telling me nearly 20 years ago that one day he was going the be the head coach of the University of Oregon. And he did it.

Scott you couldn't have said it better. This is a sad day for college track coaches. Good luck Martin and screw them all.

Martin and Renee have will be better than ever when they are out from under this pressure. Renee will have many places to work her horse in Virginia and probably can afford another. Martin will have be out from under the ridiculous pressure of being a Distance Coach at the U of O. He can choose what he wants to do and take his time deciding. Truly I am happy for him - what a relief this must be on both of them. The strain has been tremendous on both of them. U of O isn't easy and it was possible that no one could have done better considering the legacy they were taking on.

Who would I put to replace him? Obviously its got to be another distance guy. Probably a West coast guy, younger coach, should have some experience running a program.

When they hired Jerry at Wisconsin a lot of us thought that was a sign that the head track coach wanted to take complete control and phase out Wisconsins distance tradition. Obviously that hasn't happened and Jerry through his enthusiasm, knowledge, personality, and recruiting efforts have proven our doubts totally wrong.

If I was Oregen I'd go after Shumacher hard. I bet they could make him an offer he couldn't refuse.

For some reason, this pisses me off badly.

Phil Knight didn't have any part in this, I love it when more and more people get grouped by association. And people saying it is pressure from Nike - the company - to get rid of Martin. Al made his comments about what he would like to see at the University, and what he was willing to do. But he isn't responsible for this either. It is Martin's decision, and this has been internet fodder for a while, escalating this thing to the point where people are just tearing down everything and making crazy accusations. It has gotten out of hand. Al and Phil, you don't know what they want. So don't point the finger. It is sad that this is happening and that Martin feels this is the best decision for the university, and for everybody, but in the end he came to a decision on his own. He isnt being forced to leave, and he isnt being fired, so that is nobodies fault. It is unfortunate how many people have turned to simply name bashing in this situation.
