Hi,
I am an assistant HS XC coach. We have two weeks left in the season with important meets this Saturday and the next Saturday.
5 of our top 7 have been running very well and improving all season but our 5th and 7th guys have been running poorly over the last 2-3 weeks. Both of them are hard workers and have been trying to train "up" with guys that are better than them. Their recent poor performance suggests they have probably been overdoing it.
Up until this point they have been doing 40-45 MPW with 1-2 workouts a plus a race on Saturday. Weeks with two workouts have been Tuesday threshold, thursday fartlek, and weeks with one workout have been a more intense interval workout.
With only two weeks left does anyone have any thoughts on how to get them back on track? We were planning on tapering but only dropping 15 MPW over the next two weeks. But for these guys I think it might make more sense to cut their workouts and mileage in half and just try and get them rested for the next two races.
Thanks,
joe
