There's always those who will dis Pre. For drinking, frontrunning, whatever.

I'm an old(er) f#ck. I got out of high school in '75. It's hard to describe how exciting it was to have Pre around. His spirit was great, infectious.

My generation was stoked to train hard, lead races, and make bold moves far from home. Sure, there were always kickers around, but the idea of leading a race and throwing it down was accepted and admired.

I have nothing against running for the win, but I'm happy that PRE was the man in my day.

Merrit was suggested for an "erected" statue because he got busted for using a male enhancement drug. Not on his own merit. Duh!

I'd probably go for - Owens, Michael Johnson, Ed Moses (the greatest ever US athlete IMO, who often gets overlooked) and Carl Lewis.

Which I guess is very sprint heavy and also doesn't include any white athletes or women! Of course I believe these are the best 4, but in our current PC days, then If we could increase the number, then I'd add Ryun (more for impact than pure achievements, which were lightly lacking in the medal department) and Alison Felix.
