sub 1:45 marathon possible??

Odds of a 1:45 marathon seem slim then.

You would need berlin course with perfect pacing + negative split and 40-45F weather for the entire race, but based on your build up and future potential I think you could do it.

You need to run a lot of your runs at 7:30 pace or faster to have any hope of running 13.1 @ 8:00 pace. 7 miles @ goal pace is fine but you've still got 6 more to go. You might get away with this at 30 MPW but it depends on your fitness and potential.

Why does he need 7:30 to run 8:00? I think if there's a training base at 8:15 or something like that, including sufficient long runs at that pace (say, 12-14 miles), a race at 8:00 on fresh legs (i.e. following a light taper week) would be totally doable. That might mean a bit more than 30 MPW, but I don't think it has to mean faster running -- it's more a question of endurance.

faster running leads to improved efficiency at slower paces. And it helps for lower mileage runners.

thanks for the responses. full disclosure.. this is a post i would have made in february. kinda like when they put the pie in the oven in cooking shows and the next minute its done.

i ended up training for a good 12 weeks out and tapered the final week. i ended up destroying my goal and finished in 1:38:27.

OK now for the real question. i want to break 1:30 in May. i just completed a 5k in 20:34 ( lost time bc i was late and with 2000 ppl i was with the 9 minute milers and had to tie my shoe) my goal was sub 20 but ive been dealing with a foot injury. ideally id break 1:25. my training has been 20 mpw consistently over the summer in the most humid weather but i havent been able to resume training

You went from 1:58 to 1:38?! And can now run a 20:xx 5k, and do this all on 20mpw? What is your training plan like? I am curious as I am trying to break 1:40 in the half.

Consistent training is good, but there's a good chance you've gotten all you can get out of 20 mpw. Especially for the HM, you've got to find a way to increase your mileage. Other than that, tempo runs. Best bang for your buck, especially for the 5K-HM distances. A good tempo run only takes 20 minutes. With 7-8 months to progress and vary a weekly tempo run, you could really increase your high-end endurance by May.

Training plan was pretty non-existent. When I feel like running, I go run. I try to get out there around 20 mpw but I don't always hit that. My typical run is around 7 miles with a couple hundred feet elevation (Brooklyn - Fort Green - Prospect Park Loop).

I'm not trying to brag here and I need to up my mileage. No excuses. I don't know how i hit 7:31 min pace considering thats was what I did for my 4 miler. I barely ran that pace for 7 milers before running.

Very possible. I ran a 1:34 half with less than 30mpw average. Simple plan. Mostly easy runs, one or two speed workouts a week, and one longer run (8-12 mile) on weekends. 5k time was right under 18.

Not fast by LR standards but your goals are achievable.
