We have a soph kid we're trying to get to run track. He puts in mileage for soccer and last year in jr. high he ran a 51 400 without any training. No exaggeration. He ran 15 - 20 mpw during the summer for soccer and because he 'liked it'. He was running past some of XC guys who were doing 800 repeats and some guys didn't like it. They challenged him to a 1600 and he said nah, the guys would beat him but only because they 'trained for real'. We finally got him to race a couple of varsity guys over 1200.
We thought our guys would kill him, especially because he went out in 60 for the first 400.
He ran 3:05.9 and buried our guys (he also ran himself to a standstill). It was unreal that he could keep going (800 in 2:02.1 en route).
What do you think he's capable of for 1600 right now? We're desperately trying to get him away from soccer but he's damn good at it. However we think he still has a lot more potential on the track.
Some guys think he might put in more mileage than he told us he did, but I'm not sure that's the case. It might be, but he was on the field playing a lot of soccer over the summer.
