First, do away with insurance altogether. No private insurance, no single payer system. Everyone has to pay for their own medical bills. It will quickly become societal norm to use GoFundMe for treatment that isn't affordable for the individual.
This will do two things:
1) People will shop for medical services, take cost into account in addition to need, and avoid unnecessary treatment. There's no guarantee it's all paid for, so you want to make sure it's affordable.
2) A$shoIes with no friends or family that like them don't get enough money, so they die. The death rates would go up, but do we care? No, if we did we'd have paid for their medical bills. All we are left with are the people we actually like.
Insurance is just crowdfunding by the population. GoFundMe would essentially be insurance. Except the quality of your coverage depends on having people actually care about you. And your "insurance premium" would go directly to people you care about instead of to the insurance company before being doled out to the anonymous masses (after they take a cut).
It will simultaneously simplify the system, reduce cost, curb overpopulation, and weed out those dragging us down. And you can take my word for it that there would be no negative unintended consequences. Trust me it'll work.
