I am a college cross country runner and I run primarily 8ks for cross and focus on 10k-5k for track. This past summer my base stage got to 90 miles per week and I train around 70 mpw in season when races start to matter. We are still a ways out from championship races but I was wondering what people do or think I should be doing for a pre-meet run. All summer, I felt I was wasting my time if my total mileage for the day wasn't 10% of my weekly mileage. So for example my easiest day would be 9 miles when I was hitting peek mileage. For a couple of the early season races, I have used this same approach and did a total of 6-7 miles easy with a few strides at the end. Is this to much? Should I be doing any race pace or tempo help feel out the pace I want to run for the race the next day? Should I be changing it my premeet based on my weekly mileage? Should I change my premeet based on what race I am racing the next day (different premeet for racing the 1 mile vs 10k). Any helpful feedback would be appreciated.
