Injured Again. Should I hang up my spikes

    So I'm currently a fifth year with a full year left of eligibility. I am coming off an injury and think I may have overdone the comeback and now may be injured again. I have had injury problems for many years now, mild success my first few years in college and great success in high school. I'm starting to wonder if i can keep doing this. Do you think I should hang up my spikes if this injury is as bad as I think it is? I just feel like at some point I have to stop putting myself through this. Has anyone else been in this spot?

    I thought about quitting once. But I sat down and figured the pain of being patient and fighting through my injuries was less than the pain of the regret i would feel when I got older, knowing at that particular crossroads in my life I was a weak, gutless coward who gave up a truly once in a lifetime chance to chase greatness, even if the only one who really cared was me.     What are you running for at this point? Clearly you aren't going to be a pro or a top collegiate. Do you need it to pay for school? Are you content with becoming a hobby runner then sliding downhill to be a hobby jogger?

    I think I'm still holding onto the small chance that I could be a top collegiate. I already have one degree, I don't really need to keep going to school or anything. In fact, it would be in my best interest financially to stop running.

    A very good goal for all runners is to embrace serious “prehab” training… i.e. resistance training for total body development and balance, mobility improvement etc. As a runner who has faced a string of injuries, do you think this is an area you can improve significantly? Or, are you already working hard in those areas? Injury can be frustrating, but putting heightened energy into developing an more injury-proof body while also cross training etc. is a great way to ease the stress of being injured and gain a more positive outlook.

    For most of my youth, I was a competitive cyclist (cat 1) and as gruelling as that sport is, you can get away with a lot more in terms of muscle imbalances etc. without getting injured. In running, there is much less chance to hide. However, patience and effort will allow one to develop as a running athlete with better injury resistance.

    Another key question is do you see yourself as someone who wants to continue to run post-college?
