I think it'd be more interesting to compare it to Kimetto's actual WR splits since they're course specific.

We can come up with that. Kimetto essentially did the opposite of what they did this year. Run the second half close to 1:01:10 whereas that's what they did the first half this year.
Looking at the kilometer splits and especially the 5k splits, the whole race was incredibly inconsistent. It fluctuated from fast to slow to fast back to slow etc... When you look at Kimetto's race in 2014, he simply ran a slow first half and fast second half. I think that had the pace been significantly more consistent they could've gone sub 2:02:30 no question
Sorry, Couldn't wait for you guys

The last one is suspect, did Kimetto really die that much? In any case, his WR race shows much better consistency and the benefit of burning things up later rather than sooner. From 19 to 40 he bettered almost every split by Kipsang and Bekele, matched two, and was slower at two (30k and 35k by a total of 6 seconds). His margin for this key 21 kilometers: 1:03 The total elapsed time at 40K: Kimetto 1:56:29. KB and Kipsang: 1:56:54
If the two races are run side by side, Kimetto "passes" KB and Kipsang at exactly 32k- they all hit it at 1:33:15.

Kimetto ran the 33rd km 7 seconds faster and had his WR lead.
Epic time warp between 21K and the HM mark...negative time!
21 1:00:53 2:53 2:02:20 1:01:11 – 0:18
HM 1:00:11 2:02:22 1:01:29 – 0:19
I thought wejo was being stupid with the 1:00:11 HM split...now I see the Hartnett dude is reponsible. Sorry, wejo.
