Bekele came within a few meters of breaking the marathon WR to add to his 5000 and 10000 WRs. Has anyone ever held all 3 at the same time? I'm wracking my brain rather than just googling around, and I can't recall anyone doing this. Maybe Zatopek (but I don't think so) or Nurmi (but I don't think so)? Radcliffe never had the track WRs as far as I recall. Possibly Grete Waitz?

No. Hannes Kolehmainen held the 5000m and marathon records at the same time, though. It doesn't appear that any other male marathon WR holder simultaneously held a track record.

Ah... that was my next guess. I wonder if it will ever be done again. Bekele proved today that he has the tools, but I think he's the only man who does. I suppose he will regroup and go for it in the spring to strike while the iron is hot. Maybe if everything goes her way for a few years, Almaz Ayana?
