As of right now, I am the second best runner in my league with a 5k of 16:36. I did not run the race very intelligently (too fast in the first two miles, also my third race in the same week) and the kid who is currently in first for our league ran a 16:08 at the same race and I believe that it was his second race in the same week. Do I have a chance of beating him by the end of the season if I pace off of him?
We don't have enough information.
I know a guy, on my son's XC team, who could write almost exactly what you did. He has NO chance at running with the 16:08 kid because the 16:08 kid ran 15:2X last year to almost make NXN AND our 16:36 kid is pretty beat up. It happens that the third guy on the same team is a similar 28 seconds behind (17:04 ish). I give him a VERY good chance at catching the 16:36 guy because he is a freshman and has amazing youth track times.
I give you a 33% chance at running 16:08 by the end of the year because your team runs 3 races in a week and despite all that practice you still think you are running unintelligently.
Tell us more, track times, training history, last years XC times from beginning of the season vs the end, something that would help us figure if your goal is realistic.
