Pre is overrated. Didn't win Olympic hardware. Why do Americans worship a drunk driver?

he held every American flat record from 2k to 10k at 24. a lot of people drove drunk in that era.
Drunk driving is illegal. Reckless driving is illegal. Pre was known to do both often.
He was a damn good runner who killed himself before he had a chance to kill some kid walking her dog at night.

I think his legend is, that he ran hard, ran clean, and looked cool. Fourth at the Olympics is no disgrace, just bad luck. Drinking and driving is pretty stupid.

He wouldn't have had to drink so much if he ran a little smarter. 4th is no disgrace but he kind of threw away his potential if his goal was to medal or win.
Billy Mills is the man.

Looks like he ran for gold and came fourth. If he were to have run for 3rd he would've got a silver or a bronze, probably bronze. I said on a thread before the Olympics if Centro and Willis run for bronze they could end up with silver, I was nearly right.
He's dead, dude.
Question. Would you want your children looking up to him?
Okay.

Yes. I would want my kids to race with the guts that pre had, and learn from his mistakes.
