Im a HS junior training for XC. Over the summer my mileage peaked at 58 mpw. (mostly 7 flat paced miles) This was hard for me at the time but now during Comp phase im comfortable running 55 mpw with 3 qualities and 3 recoveries as well as a sunday shakeout. My 5k pr is 17 flat, looking to break 17 and hit 16's very soon.
Im wondering if it would be wiser for me to stop doing race specific workouts and replace them with CV workouts. Im racing basically every single weekend, so thats where my Vo2 max work is gettin CVg in. Im doing 20-25 minute threshold runs every week as well as long runs. My body seems to feel excellent after doing CV workouts and the next day im able to roll out a good 6-8 mile recovery @ 7 flat pace and feel like im running 7:40's like usual recoveries. Any suggestions as to dropping Vo2 workouts and doing CV's.
With the HS weekly saturday 5k's should i make my long run sundays @ an easier pace and do:
Monday: 3-4 mile LT 5:55-6:00 (8-9 mile total w/ warmup & Cooldown)
Tuesday: Easy day (6-8 miles @ 7:30's) + Strides
Wednesday: CV day i.e 5 x 1200 @ 10s slower/mi than 5k pr. ( 9 miles total)
Thurs: easy 6-8 miles @ 7:10's (8 miles)
Friday: Easy 6 miles @ 7:20-7:30's + 4 x 200 @ 5k pace (6.5-7 mi)
Sat: Race (8 total)
Sunday: Long run @ easy pace (10-13 miles)
Is this too much? I havent tried this yet. Ive been doing 3 qualities like i said. Long run, Race, Tempo and the rest are easy/recovery days. Thoughts, Advice? (Coach agrees with whatever plan i put forward for myself since im training on my own but racing for my HS)
