I have an athlete who half asses training all the time. He got injured during summer training and hes been lazy since.(Freshman Syndrome) He doesnt train for 2 months and ran a 20:35 so i was happy for him since he started running march of 2016 and only been doing 1-2 miles a day since then. I let him join 1 week late to XC and he doesnt even have the respect to train hard. Hes a good kid and hes improving time 10-11 seconds every meet but i hate how i know if he properly trained he'd be great. Heres an example for what he does: Kids do a 40min easy run, he does 35min and with a group that runs 24min 5ks... I talked to him today and said he was scared to get injured again. He also said "Ill start properly training from now on,im sorry" but idk what to do if he doesnt train from now on. Should i kick him off if he repeats the slacker mentality? What do other coaches do? I just got out of college a couple years ago an im new to coaching a big group like the one i have.
