Well, depends, if you are in last year's shape at the start of this season then I feel you could easily get down to the 17:30s range, baring injury. I ran a 18:55 5k as a freshman but have not gotten anywhere near that until my junior year where I ran a 18:52 this past week, I have cut off 28 seconds from my first race of the year which was only 3 weeks ago. Though i am not a 5k specialist I mainly do XC for fun and stay in shape and get some good competition for track season starts.
We had time trials first week of school and I ran 25:53 for 4.5 miles which is 5:45 pace
During your time trial, you hit 5K in 17:52, if you ran even splits. The 4.5 mile time trial is equivalent to a 17:31 5K, if you believe in VDOT. Since you're only going to get fitter as the season goes on by smart training, and not get injured, and recover on recovery days appropriately, and you'll run faster in a true race rather than a time trial, you have a shot at breaking 17:00 this year. Good luck!
Thanks
