Are dogs embarrassed about the smell of their flatulence?

He's not covering it. He's leaving scent from glands on his feet that say. "This is who I am and THAT is my crap."

They generally seem astonished...everytime!

Our beagle would fart and then look around in a shocked manner to see who made that noise. Like humans always trying to blame someone else for the smelly deed.

Dogs and cats will hide their poo to prevent predators from finding it. Our dog prefers pooing in shrubs to grass, and away from their usual walking path.

Why would they care about something predating their feces?

Most predators can sniff out something that's encased in plastic so the rudimentary covering that dogs and cats do is hardly a scent lockdown.

This behavior is natural in dogs. They cover up their "waste" so that an enemy does not find them, from the scent of the poop or pee. It is an instinct handed down from wolves, who hid their scent by covering up their feces in leaves, sticks, soil, or other nearby natural materials. They also rolled in animal carcasses to hide the scent of them. Your dog is just using her natural instinct to protect herself from predators.

Why would covering your poop prevent something from just following your scent trail?

Say you escape from prison and they send a Bloodhound after you, if you take a dump and cover it up is that really going to throw the dog off your trail?

Based on what I've read in this thread, digs pee and poo to mark territory AND dogs seek to hide the scent of their pee and poo to avoid predation. Dogs sure are dumb.

Lmao. Well it's a lot better than leaving that crap there. As selfish as some pet owners are, at least most clean up the mess. I guess they have to do something right to justify their little doll roaming about recklessly at the expense of innocent humans.
