I feel sorry for Chelenga. Coach Li told him that he is no longer willing to work with him. His poor performances in the marathon trials and track trials means that his Nike contract is virtually useless on December 31st.
He can no longer survive without whoring himself out on the roads. Not sure if another company will provide him any financial assistance without relocating. There is no funding in Colorado Springs. Needs to hook up with NAZ elite or Hansons.
He probably talked to other Kenyans that are recent Americans. That is a mistake. If he is going to be a road guy he should talk with Lee Troop or Kevin Hanson or Ben Rosario.
Why does Li not want to coach him?
Yeah I wonder what happened in Tucson. He's actually been running pretty well as of late. He's certainly good enough. Better than Abdi and Lawi.
Chelanga will be doped to the gills in no time. Dude will win tons of road cash and be just another Keenyan looking for a paycheck. Total bum.

I think you grossly underestimate the character of Sam. It's very obvious that you've not spent much time around him, let alone even met him.

Do you understand how this Nike coaching thing works?
Huge bonuses for Olympians. He DNF at the marathon trials and then didn't make the team on the track.

It's true. There is zero funding in Colorado Springs. Simmons has no money, and if he gets any it goes straight into his own pocket.
I agree that Chelenga should look to another coach or team for support.
It's sad that all the Kenyans go to Simmons and don't branch out to others. They tend to follow each other when it comes to coaching.
I don't agree that Chelenga will be doping in no time. Where'd that comment come from? I think Sam has integrity and is an excellent athlete. Nike tends to cut athletes loose if they don't perform to Nike's expectations.
Since Simmons will coach most anyone, it's an option, but in my opinion, not the best option for Chelenga.
I think BTC would have been a great fit for him, but that's just moving from one Nike coach to the next.
It's funny most of you guys are quick to give an explanation and don't understand the situation. Coach Scott is being respected by this guy's. Look at Hillary Bor he went from nowhere to running 8:13 this year. Gray just worn the mountain championships and coached by Scott too. Leonard korir leaves and train in Colorado Springs under Scott too. Those are two Olympians this year and one world mountain championship. You guys continue to hate on Scott and he will continue producing good results.
You again? Give it a rest and get a life.
Talk to Ray Flynn.
Chelenga will be in a different home in January.
What is ADP?
Not much longer before our Kenyan Import will have to rough it out the old fashion way like the rest of us: A full time job - Mon-Fri.

ADP is an acronym for American Distance Project, a "non-profit" run by distance coach Scott Simmons.

Simmons is a snake oil salesman! The Kenyan's can't see it because they don't know. They see a "olympic coach" showing an interest in them and immediately think 'wow, this is great'.... They have no idea the reputation Simmons has among other coaches, the running community, and people in Colorado Springs. Do a search on this main forum for "Scott Simmons" and see what comes up. You will be amazed at the consistent pattern of concerns raised by people for YEARS. He's had an ongoing bad reputation.
If people who know him are all saying that he’s bad news, it's probably because he is.
Ugh, this is devastating. I really like Sam and he's been an awesome part of the Tucson crew.
Another nail in the Nike coffin for me. Used to be a loyal Nike wearer, but if this is how they treat one of my favorite athletes, they're doing a great job of making sure I never buy a single one of their products again.

So Sam leaves a coach who coaches one of the most seculated PED users and Sam is going to use drugs? NO. Sam is a good guy. I wonder what Coach Li is about. Certainly his college teams could be better.
He gets 6th at Beach to Beacon and 3rd at the Falmouth Road Race and his contract hinges on his marathon and 10,000 trials alone? Maybe but maybe he wants a new company. Capriotti would drop him without a thought but Sam should stay if he wants to or can. He is a loyal guy. "NIKE" (meaning Capriotti) is a loose cannon.
I don't see a lot of substance in this thread. Sam is a good guy. Too bad there is doubt about where he stands in the running world right now. It's a wait and see situation to me.
