The Flyknit Racer is too heavy for 5K racing? Do you mean on the track? A size 10 weighs 6 oz.
To answer your question, kind of. I have done plenty of long tempos, 8-12 miles, and workouts/longer runs in them (up to 15 miles and have raced multiple marathons in them). Have I used them as my daily trainer? No. Would I? No. They are fairly hard and I am more concerned about staying healthy than how my shoes look.
I suppose it depends on how much you are running. If you are doing a low mileage high quality style of training (under maybe 45-50/week) and you're not injury prone, you should be fine. Otherwise I think it is a very bad idea.
Sort of a big jump from you use them for mileage to "a very bad idea," but I take your point. For the next 3-4 months, I probably will be in the 40-60 range, so I'll give it a try. I'm about 110 lbs and train fast so it shouldn't be a huge burden.
Thanks.
I've run in lunaracer for the past 4-5 years.
I wouldn't consider a 12 mile tempo run or the occasional marathon paced 15 miler a significant portion of mileage if I am doing 80-90 MPW. Definitely would never throw on a pair of Flyknit Racers and head out the door for a recovery run or a regular medium effort long run.
I would be cautious with Flyknits vs. Lunaracers too. Lunaracers are quite a bit softer than Flyknits. If I had to choose between the two I would train in Lunaracers over Flyknits because of this.
