OK, I will admit I came to this thread to read a humorous stream of ridicule (like the 'roast' of a celebrity). There are actually meaningful, useful posts here, though!
My 2 cents:
You race too much. I'm older now, but even in HS I picked a handful of races per year, with maybe 3 of those truly important, meaning, I peaked for them. Age slows recovery, I think, so these days I've got like 3 or 4 on the calendar for the next year. I did a few more in my teens, but none. Of this once-a-week stuff. I don't run 40 races a year now and didn't when I was 15. I can now and could then peak and taper. This allowed me to (probably) come pretty close to my potential, meaning whatever I was genetically capable of. You can't.
The catch:
To follow the above advice and go into races mentally and physically rested, able to truly give all you have in one race, you can't be on a school team. HS or college. Read 'Sub 4' about Alan Webb and Michigan. Near the end is an excerpted interview with El G and his coach. They say the NCAA isn't just a waste of time but disadvantageous for any running 800 or longer.
Haile nor Kenny B never ran for a school. Look at anyone near the top now: you may be surprised at how sparse their racing schedules are! Some of them are just tune-up races, too. Rupp had, I suspect, 2 this year that were REALLY important (both Oly finals). Maybe the US selections for both of those, too. That's 4, and it's nowhere near one a week. In fact, I'm aware of maybe 2 or 3 more he did all year including just going through the motions at minor events.
Not everyone will agree, of course. In the Webb book, Lagat weighs in and says NCAA, with it's heavy racing schedule, is actually good for you! HS teams are worse in my mind. I didn't see any reason to fool with it when a HS student myself, and I have some PRs from those days that I can't break now (full marathon among them)! I could use the training I had partially because I wasn't overraced and just running on fumes. When there are 2 hard workouts a week plus a race, that can be like 20 significant efforts in a given month. No surprise that none of them stands out as a supreme effort that surprised even yourself. No 'Wow, I didn't know I had a 34 10k in me!'
You, like most of your age group, may believe that without school sanction sport has no value or meaning. Fortunately for my running resume, I don't think that, but many do - nearly everyone in the US under 25, in fact. If you're in this group, then not only is running at my age impossible, but you may never come close to what you are truly capable of.
You are doing yourself a disservice by not at least thinking about this!
