Time means something, even more than medals in some cases. I recently received a plaque for placing 2nd overall in a 5 mile race and my time was not fast. I'd rather have a faster 5 mile PR. Congrats Shannon! Was rooting for you!

Robots? Have you listened to a Centro interview? That guy is off the wall. Easily a more interesting interview than any other American middle distance runner.

As for Shannon, she conducts herself as well as anyone in interviews. Certainly more open and cordial than Jenny or even Molly Huddle.

You seem to me like someone who doesn't really follow the sport, you just read a few threads on these boards and form a half-cocked opinion.

I find it funny that people are making this a continuation of the rivalry between Shannon and Jenny -- even though Jenny has done almost nothing at the 5,000m distance, and doesn't seem to be too interested in it, either.

The real rivalry here is with Molly Huddle, who just lost her American record. Molly will have her revenge, though.

Why are you pretending this is difficult or that there is a double standard? It's clear that people like runners to have BOTH fast times and medals. One is not necessarily better than the other. They both solidify and reinforce each other. Bekele - there is no doubt about him because he has fast times AND medals. This isn't complicated. It is not a double standard. It is not hating.

That was an impressive run, especially considering that Rowbury has been at it since indoors this year. I wonder if she will begin transitioning to the 5000 looking forward to 2020.

Jenny 2x World Medal, 1x Olympic Medal, and 3:57/9:12 to her credit. Career wise I'd probably give the nod to Rowbury unless Jenny runs an AR or gets another World's medal.

Agreed. I'm always rooting for Jenny over Shannon, but the anti-Shannon bias on these boards is so blatant. Shannon actually seems like a really cool person, it's her coach that's so off-putting. But with the exception of the near-miss in Rio, it's hard for even the most fervent Shannon haters to ignore how well she's been running this year.

That said, I'd love to see Jenny take a serious crack at the 5,000 AR. Her PR is only 14:56 but she's beaten up on Senbere Teferi in the past, who beat Shannon by 10 seconds here. It would be cool if Molly tried to get it back too, before she moves up for good. The women's 5,000m AR seems to slightly lag behind the other distance events, so hopefully Shannon's run today inspires some of her competition to lower it in the future.
