I ran in high schoo. My pr's were 4:31 1500, 9:56 3,000, and 18:10 5k. Looking back on it, our coaching was horrible. We ran 3 to 6 easy miles a day, 5 days a week. A long week was 30 miles. Maybe a speed workout every other week or so. I barely ran in the off season. I ran off and on after high school but basically haven't run in about 5 years
I'm now 32 and I just started running again about 2 1/2 months ago. I decided to train for a 10k. I'm trying to go from couch to 40 minute 10k in 3 months. I think I'm there. I stared out with a month and a half of easy jogging and then the last month has been pretty hard training (for someone who doesn't have a big milage base built up.) If I miss 40 minutes, it's not going to be by much.
A year from now I see myself being at 60+ miles a week and a 36 minute 10k and 3 hour marathon. I feel those are easily obtainable goals for me, with proper training. Maybe I shouldn't be looking farther than that in to the future, but what goals are realistic for 2 or 3 years down the road? Obviously the answer is that nobody can know until I get closer, but I just want to have a conversation about it. Are 5 minute miles for a 10k out of the question? I feel like it is, but it seems like shaving a minute and a half off isn't as far off as it seems
