I never understand these kinds of threads. Who cares? They are two of the all-time greatest runners ever, of any country. The achievements of each are kind of like apples and oranges. Unless you have one that stands head and shoulders above all others (like Gretzsky in hockey), why the need to declare one to be the greatest. If it's not clear cut, just let be and celebrate each. Kenya is proud of both of them.

I liked Tergat, but Kipchoge's done the following:
-Been world champion on the track.
-Ran the fastest ever championship 5k time.
-Defeated El G. and Bekele at their prime in the above race, Bekele was faster than Geb (though maybe not greater) and El G. could beat both. Tergat lost to Geb repeatedly.
-Olympic champion.
-incredibly consistent over the marathon.
Neither one is the greatest Kenyan runner ever.

And the answer is...Henry Rono. Unlike the others, he might have actually competed clean.

Not an easy decision between Tergat and Kipchoge, but I think I would go for Kipchoge, since Tergat never in has career was really dominant, which Kipchoge at the moment is. Also a 13 year span between global titles is unique.
But there are also other names which should be considered: Kipchoge Keino, David Rudisha, Moses Kiptanui, Ezekiel Kemboi... really not easy to decide.
Eliud Kipchoge should be in the top 10 all-time now, definitely ahead of Mo Farah. Much better PBs in the 3000m, 5000m, Marathon, also in the Half-Marathon. Almost equal in the 10000m. Farah's 4 doubles are also great, for sure, but his career record otherwise really is too weak. Without Kenenisa Bekele (arguably Nr. 2 distance runner ever, against he had to compete during Bekele's prime)), Kipchoge also would have more titles.

Henry Rono, Daniel Komen, Bernard Lagat, Wilson Kipketer and Noah Ngeny are also in the conversation.

With his 2nd Olympic title from Rio, I think Rudisha definitely is ahead of Kipketer. Ngeny's career at the very top was too short. Rono and Komen have done something absolutely unique in a short period of time. Lagat not so unique, but for an very impressive period. Hard to argue against them.
