I have been having problems with my IT band (mostly in my hip) for about a month and a half that has gradually gotten worse until recently, when I started physical therapy. So far, the PT doesn't seem to be helping too much (I've only had 4 sessions, though). At each of my sessions, I've had a deep heat ultrasound, rode the stationary bike, done step-ups, about 6 stretches, and then finished with electrotherapy. I also have a set of stretches to do at home, and have been icing my hip and IT band. My doctor told me to take 4 weeks off running (I'm a high school cross country runner) for now, and my follow-up appointment is in a few days. I also have a new coach who is just starting to learn about running, so he doesn't seem to understand the injury, and doesn't seem too keen of the idea that I'm missing so much of the season. The physical therapist has figured out that part of the problem is that my injured leg is shorter than the other one by a little over 1/4 inch. Although I have good and bad days, I am still generally having some pain when just sitting, more when standing for long periods of time or walking, and a lot of pain when going up steps or hills. When should I start running again? When I do start back, should I take it easy for a while, and should I begin running in meets again immediately? I feel like I've missed so much training that it's sadly going to take a lot to get back to where I was. I'm not sure that running at full speed this soon into my recovery is the best idea, but I don't want to disappoint my team, parents, or coaches, and am starting to get discouraged. I have already missed the first meet, all of the regular-season practices, and some summer training due to the injury. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
