It really depends on your specialty. More importantly your call schedule. If you have a large group or solo practice, can you take call from further than x amount of minutes from the hospital.... There are a lot of factors. If it is important to you, plan on a career that interests you and allows for the other interests in your life. For instance a solo practitioner in OB/GYN will have next to zero time, where as a hospitalist or ER doc will have a set schedule that can be worked around. If you can make it work, the kids will appreciate it. Most kids notice when a professional career person makes time for them, it is a positive that shows them how important it is to give back. Good luck with matching, residency, and your career!! And BTW workout and sleep whenever possible, because the amount of time and energy you will have to do so will decrease dramatically soon.
