death valley, no joke
Dead Horse Point
Joshua tree just outside palm springs is really nice, would be even better in December than when I went. Had great trails, and you can just as easily make your own on the slickrock if you are careful of the surface and watch for snakes and stuff. Glacier had better scenery, but is more popular. Pretty much any larger park out west will be good.

In December, that's not a bad choice at all. Although, Yellowstone is pretty amazing on Nordic skis with various yurts that you can stay in along the way.
Chickamaga, Petersburg

December is a good time to visit the Everglades. You could swing down and , the Dry Tortugas and the keys while you're at it or head over to Miami and check out Biscayne.
Thanks folks

If you have not been, Mammoth Caves NP is stunning. Not sure about early December, though.
You could do a cool little historic fort tour. Hit Fort Pulaski outside Savannah and then the one in St Augustine. You could find others as well. Fort Pulaski is interesting historically.
Gettysburg
Glacier in Montana. After Sept 1 no tourists, weather still great.
