Ahhh, I think you are thinking of cycling when you say race against, attack, and chase. In running, there are no such things because the benefit of aerodynamic drafting is not there are such low speeds. You can't "attack" a runner like you can in cycling, the pack advantage does not exist in running. Kipchoge can just run at the front the whole entire marathon without any disadvantage.
