If you widen the period to two months, the group of athletes that pass the (admittently somewhat arbitraray) criteria is still only 25 large.
A few things strike me:
- There are relatively few African born athletes in the group. Do they specialize more? Haile Gebrselassie is the exception an the best in the combination as well.
- The are relatively many athletes from Spain/Portugal in the group. Was this their marathon approach?
- Galen Rupp's performances stand out because nobody's 10k is that good just before a championship marathon. Imagine he had run in Berlin and ran 2:05.
- Is it a coincidence that Alberto Salazar is also in the list? I don't think so. His 10k is the 2nd best (in the 8-day period list)
I added the position in the alltime lists now.
