Is Rupp only 1:25 better than Ward in the marathon?

He was 1:48 better in the Olympic Trials. Conclusion: Rupp is less than 1.49 better than Ward in the marathon.

Rupp didn't push himself until the final 8 miles thats where all the 1:25 appeared. Also, he went all out for gold, which actually cost him some time. If he had run more conservatively he may have gotten silver. He probably lost a good 30 seconds over the final 5 miles by pushing so hard from 18-21.

Combined I'd say he's a good 4.5 minutes better than Ward.

If Ward can run 2:09:00 on a fast course I think Rupp can run 2:04:30 on a fast course

Some of you people are sad products of breeding and/or the education system. Rupp was conserving energy if he was running that much within himself. You don't get that? His finish is worse if he goes out faster. Why would Rupp be 6 minutes faster than Tadese in a marathon?

Bekele has finished faster 10k's in 52 seconds, than Rupp has finished in 58 seconds.

Therefore, Bekele can run the 10k 2.5 minutes faster than Rupp.

Yeah but what does even pacing have to do with hyperbolic arithmetic of a moron?

Ward's final 2.2 km were the 2nd fastest in the field, trailing only Kipchpge. Are we to assume he could have run faster? Possibly, but those claiming Galen can run so much faster have limited understanding.

Ward is, obviously, the American men's marathon GOAT. Rupp is in the conversation but his entire portfolio can't match Ward's just quite yet. I'd put Bill Rodgers above Rupp for now too.

Also, if you do the math, and adjust for wind shear (most people forget that factor) then it can be seen that Ward will retire with a lifetime best of 2:06:01. Rupp will most likely be in the 2:01:01 - 2:01:03 range.

Except...we can assume that Kipchoge didn't run the race as fast as he could have. He didn't need to, as he won easily.

Thus, Kipchoge is probably better than Rupp, Ward and everyone else by even more than he beat them by in Rio.

On a fast course, in good conditions, with a pacer:

Kipchoge - 2:02:22

Rupp - 2:07:08

Ward - 2:08:20

WR pace is 4:43. After a few miles at that pace Rupp was broke and fell back to 5 min miles unable to pick off an 8 second gap.

He's a nice little marathon guy who at his pace was slower than Ron Tabb.

I know this thread is hilarious. Rupp won the bronze medal and yet people are ripping his performance because Jared ward finished to close to him. Ridiculous.
