My daughter is a junior on the XC team. Last year she was able to pull off mid-18's on a 3 mile course, low 19s in 5k. Over the course of track, it was a struggle for her to break 12:20 in the 3200 and 5:45 in the 1600. Summer was a constant struggle to maintain any sort of fast pace for anything. Emotional, unmotivated, and extremely fatigued, I had her blood drawn. Ferritin was 15, hemoglobin was 11.8, hematocrit was 36.8. This was July 1. We supplemented with 3/day Proferrin and built up to 2-3/day ferrous sulfate. August 15, her ferritin came up to 49.8, hemoglobin 12.8, hematocrit 36.7.
Her race times are 2-3 minutes slower on the same XC courses still. She can hit her workouts and her runs are averaging 7:30-45 min/mile for 4-6 miles. They do interval 12x400, or 5x1000 once a week, 2x1600 once a week, and medium distance runs otherwise. One rest day. They topped out at 40 mpw, which isn't any more than her sophomore year, so I don't think she's over trained.
How long will it take for her to feel better assuming it's still the iron restoration slowing her down? It's so frustrating for her when she was running 3 minutes faster with east last year.
