An instant classic. At the end of the race Centro Sr. puts his arm around Al Sal and says "you may be inferior to me, but you will coach my future son to greatness beyond both of our abilities"
#poetic #thefuture # arrogantSOB
"but you will coach my future son to greatness beyond both of our abilities"
Except that Matt Sr provides much coaching assistance to Jr. Salazar does not get full credit.
Nike should have an NFL team in Beaverton
Yup, on oldie but a goodie, forgot Sr. looks like Frank Zappa.
AlSal was a tough cookie.
Thanks for the post. I think this might provide evidence that Centro is a strength runner that may be geared towards running exceptional 5ks in the future. Do you think Centro can crack 12:53? How long will Centro's career span as a dominant force on the USA running scene? 2011 1500 USATF champ. Could he still be here in 2021 as the 5000 USATF champ?

Only 5 years. I don't see why not.

But AlSal ranked No. 1 by T&FN for 1982, Centro, Sr., No. 2 . . . the last laugh.
I thought Salazar was known for having a big kick. Was that just for the marathon? Or was Centrowitz just that much better? Cool race to watch. The both of them were beasts.

"ANNOUNCER?" That is your favorite, Larry Rawson, in his very early 40s on the mic saying that.

If Larry Lawson said Salazar had no kick and must be a front runner then that is the way he knew Salazar raced. That Salazar coaches the complete opposite of that is really interesting.
Still photos you will all enjoy:

Larry Rawson was even urging folks to go out to the local high school track back then!

I guess we (old-timers) thought everyone knew this???
Yes, AlSal has no kick on the track, in cross, or in shorter road races, but was tough as nails and ALWAYS pushed the pace from the front (ala Pre). Although he did win a couple marathons with a final burst near the finish, those were against "pure" marathoner types = guys who rarely raced shorter distances and had even less kick. It's all relative.
No, there's nothing interesting or unusual at all that as a coach he trains his runners to kick - pretty much any smart coach does. Surely he would have loved to have had Mo, Galen, or Matt's wheels back in his day.
Sorry to disagee with you, but It is unusual. He only trains kickers. He knows how to be a front runner but does train anyone that does that. Hasay used to be a front runner, but Salazar changed her ways. That is unusual.

I wouldn't say it's unusual, in fact most coaches train runners to be kickers vs front runners, in my opinion to their detriment. Rupp, for example, I think would have been a much better runner had he run more like Bekele then Lagat. It is good to see him reaching more of his potential now that he's moving to the marathon. However he would have been faster had Salazar not been training Rupp for the 400 meters prior to Rio. Why Salazar does that is perhaps because he considered his front running style to be a failure, but personally I think he was quite successful.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Rest in Peace Adrian Lehmann - 2:11 Swiss marathoner. Dies of heart attack.
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
