What do you all think? D1 Coach hasn't been answering emails but with my times I can get a spot on the team looking at the incoming freshman and me being faster than most of them. I was thinking about walking into his office and talking with him and trying to get a spot on the team. I'm a senior in high school this year and will be going to college next year.
Do it. As a coach that regrettably admits to not answering very email or voice mail, I have never turned down a prospective athlete that knocks on my door in person. Many of these meetings are complete non starters, but if your times are competitive you should get a coach's attention. If not, look elsewhere.
That's exactly what I did! I wasn't recruited out of HS and wasn't sure I wanted to keep running. Once it got closer to fall classes starting I decided I wanted to give it a try. I walked into the coaches office and asked if I could walk-on. He had a pretty open walk-on policy as long as you got good grades, stayed out of trouble, and worked hard at practice. I wasn't that great coming out of HS but ended up improving a ton and earned scholarship money by my junior year (books and room/board). This was at a mid-level D-1 school. Granted, this was in the early 1990s and I'm a female, if that makes a difference. Either way, you have nothing to lose!
OP, have you tried calling the coach?
I assume if you're talking about walking into his office that you live nearby. It would be a bummer if you drive a ways to pop in on him and he wasn't there that day.
You could also be emailing the wrong person, most schools have an assistant coach handle recruiting.
But if all else fails, I think I wouldn't want to run for a coach who wouldn't talk to me if I showed up at his office, so you have nothing to lose, IMO.
Also, good luck this year and next, I am really glad I ran in college even as a mid to rear-pack DI guy.
Do you know when he's in his office? Are you going to camp there?
