Going to be racing on a mixture of dirt and pavement throughout the season, so will need something that can withstand the pavement. Don't really have a price limit as of yet, will take any recommendations, thanks.

No flats for high school kids. Too much risk of injury

By this reasoning you wouldn't recommend spikes either since spikes are the same thing but even lighter usually. ??
....And by that reasoning, no spikes on track either because the track is hardest on high school athletes. ??
So do your athletes still post decent times with full on stability shoes? Do they know that they are leaving at least 3 -5 % out on the course?
I would disagree and say instead to gradually do more grass running, working towards barefoot running for at least part of 2-3 days per week. Improving foot strength and flexibilty is more important for injury prevention than flat out avoidance of flats. That sounds like a blanket policy by a coach who has had past general problems and didn't want to teach and coach the importance of proper running/foot development. A runner who waits until college or beyond to start using flats and spikes is way behind in both mechanics and foot development and will get hurt much easier at a time when the mileage demands are going up. Bad advise
Brooks Mach 18 spikeless are great xc racers for mixed surfaces.
So are NB xc900 v3s.
