Google the video. They're reporting 56m. Didn't look that far to me.

What if Bolt returns to the next Olympics as a decathlete....mind is blown.

You really think that Bolt hasn't handled a javelin before? He has been to hundreds of track meets.

Wut? Where did I say I thought he hadn't handled a javelin before? I thought he looked pretty good. It just didn't look like 56m. And I've been to hundreds of track meets and never handled a javelin at one. Is that a thing? Everyone who at a track meet throws a javelin?
Oh yes.

He threw it 40 meters.
He probably shouldn't have because now he's hurt his back from it apparently which means only 2 golds from him from now on.
It seems like 43/45 meters. No more than that.
I just clocked it in at 200m
Here is the video.

It's now being reported as being 54 meters.

I know nothing about javelin throw distances. Is that a good distance?

I don't either, but Eaton's pr is listed as 66m on wikipedia.
I don't know how the scores are tabulated in the decathlon, but boy does his throw raise some a dumb what if question. If he could hit average mark in the javelin for an olympian decathlete and matched the lowest marks of the olympians in all the other events he'd be unsuited for, would his 100m, 400m, and LJ potential make him competitive?
I'm not surprised because he is a super athlete. As a high school coach who has produced a number of decathletes it is quite common to find out that someone really proficient in a couple of events can pick up others and do quite well. Now if you said that he threw 240', that would be another thing!
54 isn't good for a decathlete, but for a guy without training, it's pretty good.
played around with this calculator:
https://www.usatf.org/statistics/calculators/combinedEventsScoring/?avad=160597_ed5d40fb
at least some of these numbers are too optimistic, were he to become a generalist.
100m...9.8 ...1146
Long Jump ... 8 ... 1061
Shot Put ... 13.5 ... 698
High Jump ... 1.9 ... 714
400m ... 45.5 ... 1034
110m Hurdles ... 15 ... 850
Discus Throw ...41.72 ... 700
Pole Vault ... 4.29 ... 699
Javelin Throw ... 55 ... 663
1500m ... 4:37 ... 699
Total Score:
8264
Would have put him 13th in Rio.
a different combination:
100m ... 9.9 ... 1121
Long Jump ... 7.8 ... 1010
Shot Put ... 13.5 ... 698
High Jump ... 1.9 ... 714
400m ... 45.8 ... 1018
110m Hurdles ... 14.3 ... 936
Discus Throw ... 41.72 ... 700
Pole Vault ... 4.29 ... 699
Javelin Throw ... 60 ... 738
1500m ... 4:29 ... 751
Total Score:
8385
Would have put him 8th in Rio.

He did? This was over 4 months ago. No back injury, not 40 meters, you're just making stuff up.
The West Indies used to produce some very fast bowlers at cricket.
Years ago, when I noticed that with just a flick of his arm, Bolt would propel those bunch of flowers and other items they give at the end of a race, into the spectators, Bolt’s would fly way up into the stands, compared to other athletes who could just about reach the first couple of rows.
I thought back then, were cricket still the number one sport in the West Indies, Bolt would have made a great fast bowler.
1. 54 metres is not an impressive distance for javelin. It's like a decent junior male throw.
2. Who even says this is the correct weight? Could be the 600g or even lighter.

They still do, just not of the quality of Roberts, Garner, Holding, Marshall, Croft, Patterson, Walsh, Ambrose, Bishop and too many others to mention these days. Holding started out as a long jumper I believe.

Very impressive for someone not trained at the discipline.
That looks like 40-41 meters tops! still pretty good for a guy who's not a javelin thrower but 54? No way, look at the flight and how long it was in the air. This one deserves a "C'mon Man!"
