All that cheating. Not even worth it. At least Lance won.

Me too, with Gore-Tex, from 1978 or 1979, jacket and long pants. Makes a lot of noise when running in them because the material is kind of stiff. But when SportHill came out, I started wearing that instead (I live in Pacific NW).
I also still have some of Frank's shorts . . . Shorter shorts, get it?
He is a heroic figure. Check out his new memoir, "My Marathon."
When did Shorter race the likes of Kipchoge? Not to take anything away from his achievements but let's be realistic here - Kipchoge is arguably the greatest marathoner ever. He is miles ahead of anyone from Shorter's era. Honestly, Likesa is too. If you swap Rupp and Shorter in their respective Olympic marathons, it's reasonable to assume they could achieve the same results, especially given that Rupp's time in Rio was 25 seconds faster than Shorter's time in Munich. It's worth noting that this was only Rupp's second marathon, with both run in less than optimal conditions.
Not to take anything away from Shorter, but Rupp is running in an era dominated by East Africans, and the doping/cheating is much more widespread, sophisticated, and effective than it was 45 years ago.

Oh the irony...yeah the doping/cheating is why Rupp is so good.

give Shorter a different hat at each aid station, special Nike shoes, and sweat-wicking clothing and I say Shorter picks up 25 seconds easy
one thing Rupp never did was lay down a surge on his 2/3 top competitors, passive is as passive gets
True, Rupp didn't surge, but he did hang with Kipchoge and Lelisa for that ridiculous 14:25 split from 30-35k. In my opinion he had a chance to run more conservatively and maybe pick up silver. Hang back, don't cover that move, then pick up the pieces when Lelisa fades. But instead he went for it. Rupp courageously went with the move, and while he didn't end up winning he gave himself a shot. I thought he ran very bravely.

Yeah, that's what he meant - Galen was 25 seconds ahead, but also had higher-tech. With equal technology they'd be roughly equivalent.
Shorter was a great man & a great racer with great results. It's also true that Galen seldomly leads a race. But if you think that any level of technology or equilibration of external factors like weather & shoes would allow Frank to beat Kipchoge, you're out of your mind. Frank would be silver behind Eliud. However, within the next 4 years, Eliud might choose to retire....
Love the optimism. But come back to the boards once Galen has ran more than TWO marathons and really see where his potential is
A better question might be whether Gebreselassie would've closed down on Shorter with a 25-second advantage.

Shorter was impressive no doubt. Rupp has medals in the 10,000 and the marathon, which neither Frank nor any other American has experienced.

Shorter had Special NIKE shoes, he choose not to wear them and Phil is still pissed about that one!!!!! 72 was supposed to be PRE and Shorter but Shorter choose his Tigers at the last minute and screwed Nike.
He does have the Gold, but in this Era, Shorter would lucky to be Ritz...
It really shows how stupid some posters are to have a thread where people hint that Shorter could even hold Rupp's jock, he couldn't.

Dude. Frank has gold. How stupid are you?

What a stupid comment. Galen himself would tell you so.
Moron.
Two golds, if you count the one he was robbed of by the proven doper Cierpinski.
I didn't know Frank wore Asics for his gold medal. I bet that's why Nike tried to have him killed. Good thing he got out of the car.
Probably Nike that killed his apparel line too.

You still don't. Frank wore Adidas in Munich.
