I am a 14 year old and just about to go to high school, and I want to be in cross-country. I have been constantly reminded that I suck at running, with a mile of 8:14. ( I probably will get a 12:50 on the one and half mile) I have never trained for running and would like to know the average 1 mile times. Thanks!
First off, cross country is usually 5k or 3 miles for high schoolers. JV they will have do 2 sometimes, not often though.
Average times for high school runners vary from state to state, school to school. If you go to a school with a strong xc program, average might mean mid 18's for the 5k, if you go to a weaker one, average might be 22-23 min for the 5k, the first season I ran, I ran 22 for the 5k, my teamates ran 23, 26, 30, and our fastest ran 19. Last year, I was by 17:45, others were 17:30, 18, 19, 19:30, so our varsity average was like 24 the first year, and then like 18:30. On other teams varsity averages might be 15:30.
Are you male or female?
I would say average for males is like 21 min for the 5k. You will improve a lot in your first year. I went from where you are to a 22 min 5k in a few months of training.
