Major fiasco as the athletes luckily avoid 5-year prison terms for falsifying documents.
This isn't the first major ticket scam in Rio either.

Again, this shows how smart Lochte and swimmers were to pay the $50 and high-tail out of there. If the "police" had arrived, it would be at least $3K each.
Except he didn't seem to realize this, and bragged to his mom about keeping his tough guy cool when they pulled guns.

Why didn't the Kenyan guy get such a fine for his fake documents to get free meals?
Or does it only apply to rich white Australians?
Now they have had their passports confiscated until they cough up the dough. Then they have to lie low for two (2) years to get it expunged.
was it racism? wrote:

he was caught by IAAF officials, not cops
Australia’s Deputy Chef de Mission Fiona de Jong came up with a resolution and presented it to the Brazilian authorities. Per her suggestion, nine athletes were charged with falsifying a document (and a tenth, cyclist Matthew Glaetzer, was detained as a witness). After speaking with a judge and giving their testimony, the athletes returned to the Olympic Village at 5:30 am.
One wonders how bad it really was, when this was the "negotiated" settlement, allowing them to get home by the ever-early hour of 5:30am.
Probably could have charged them with a heap of other charges, if Australia weren't a global trade partner.
Rio continues to everything in its power to ensure low attendance.
Such as requiring athletes to pay to attend.

Plenty attendance at the party scenes (Club France).
Maybe it's just the games themselves that suck.

Australia's Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller has insisted the Olympians were "definitely not at fault".
Steps are now being taken for the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) to pay the fines.
“The athletes were held at a police station for many hours and I apologise for the trauma they went through, the problem with the accreditation was not their fault†said Chiller, who met with those involved along with AOC chief executive Fiona de Jong today.
"For legal reasons I am not in a position to elaborate except to say it is important to know that the Australian athletes were definitely not at fault.
"I am very disappointed our athletes had to go through what then went through last night."
So did the Australian committee as a whole conspire to falsify documents? If the athletes didn't fudge their credentials, then who did? The "Ozzies" need to be banned from future Olympiads due to their scheming ways and attempts to turn the perfect Rio games of 2016 into nothing more than a sideshow for their athletes' eyes. Shame, I say! Shame.

Probably they will find a way to blame the Chinese (who are currently being stopped from buying up power companies in AU due to "security reasons").
"I am very disappointed our athletes had to go through what they went through last night."
Disappointed at whom? The Brazilian police for DOING THEIR JOB?!??
These Ozzies were the original whiners too, complaining their Village HQs were not in good enough shape, and then getting their laptops stolen in the fake fire alarm.
Hiliariously, they "rehabilitated" the swimmer who slept at a friend's (causing much consternation in the bureau-ranks) one night, and after intense Twitter pressure have caved and are allowing her to participate in CC.
Just lucky AUS doesn't have any bigname athletes like Lochte involved, or they'd be in REAL tourble.
Sad that all these Olympic guests to Brazil are making the local authorities stay up to the wee hours to resolve their problems.
The official accreditations in Rio also act as a visa and any withdrawal of that by the IOC would result in deportation. That appeared to be a genuine concern by the AOC on what was another long night for officials on the ground in Brazil.
Now AU is trying to claim this is a standard practice ("traditional").Crooks will always make excuses, and then she blames the Brazilians authorities and is "disappointed" about the supposed trauma her athletes might feel. Bleh.
"Every jurisdiction has their own local laws, and we are in Brazil so we understand that our athletes need to adhere to the Brazilian law," said de Jong, adding the athletes had been dealt with "fairly".
Chef de mission Chiller said an internal investigation was taking place, but that the process of putting a sticker on your accreditation with another venue access code on it is "traditional" at Olympic Games.
She said she was "disappointed" at the athletes' treatment, adding: "We have and will continue to provide as much support and counselling to them and their parents."

Again we see the white privilege shining through (and showing it's not just a guy thing), she doesn't care one fig about how much needless organizational strain the Aussies caused, only that they need "support and counselling" (not to mention their parents!).

It makes no sense. Particularly for head-to-head sports, you should allow athletes from the countries involved in a match to be there, when there's empty seats anyway.
Rio police have ordered four or five passports from the members of the Olympic Committee of Ireland to be confiscated.
http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1040851/olympic-council-of-ireland-officials-questioned-as-brazilian-police-continue-ticketing-investigationChiller has promised a full investigation into how the sticker scam the athletes used to tamper with their accreditations to get into events unfolded, adding it was a tradition used by multiple national organisations for many years.
Chiller admitted she was made aware of the sticker scam a few days before the athletes were detained by police at the men’s basketball semi-final and asked for it to stop only for her directions to be ignored.
“I became aware of it a few days earlier. I said that’s not the way our team behaves,†she said.
Chiller has since apologised directly to the athletes and some of their families for the embarrassment and pain caused by this situation.
Gold Medal to the Rio de Janeiro police (Declan Hill)
It is hard not to like the take no prisoners attitude of the Rio de Janeiro police to senior international sports officials and spoiled athletic brats in the US swim team.
Actually, ‘take no prisoners’ is the wrong term to use because this is the second time that the Rio police have arrested senior sports officials for alleged ticket scalping. The first time was during the FIFA World Cup in 2014 when they arrested senior football officials for purported ticket scams. Now the Rio de Janeiro authorities have locked up the Irish IOC officials in a maximum security jail. They do so because the FIFA officials high-tailed it out of the country when faced with similar charges so now the Brazilians have deemed all senior sports officials as high-risk of flight’.
Those white terrorists should be waterboarded.
Horrors, now it turns out that these nine that got caught were just the tip of the iceberg. If Brazil police had been on their toes, it would have been closer to a $3K x 90 parlay ($290K total).http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1041091/investigation-alleges-80-more-australian-athletes-gained-access-to-olympic-basketball-semi-final
