Ashton Eaton just put his hand over his heart for the National Anthem. It seems like no one does this anymore. Thanks to him for showing true patriotism.

Why does everyone have to be offended over everything these days? Get over it. Many people don't, and that doesn't mean that someone loves America less because they forget do it.
Will you ever do anything as big as some of these athletes have done in terms of representing this country? I highly doubt it.
Agreed, political correctness run amokBut hey, that's what fuels conservatism

Get over yourself, and your petty obeisant rituals.

Pretty cool word, "obeisant". I have no idea what it means but it certainly sounds cool.
+1
Seriously, who cares? We're talking about a pretty piece of cloth and a tune that used to be an English drinking song.
If you think patriotism is worshiping a graven image (yeah, flags qualify) and trying to hit a drunken high note, you have a very shallow idea of patriotism indeed.
But easy gestures are what these guys go for, right? Certainly not the hard work of trying to make a great country even better.
Don't call people halfbreeds because you're the only dog around here.

A hand over the heart is "a true sign of patriotism?" In what country? On what planet? In what century?

Put your white robe and pointy hat on you racist pig. You are an embarrassment to the rest of us with your hate
Take note Gabby Douglas.

Thank you, Sir. +100.
If any of you "still-living-with-your-parents," "running-defines-my-manhood," sheep had ever driven over an IED, been in a firefight, seen a brother KIA, etc. you'd few that "piece of cloth" a little differently. Further, you'd understand it's not asking too much of those who are representing America on the world's stage to show it the most minimum level of respect.
But what's wrong with placing your hand over your heart when the anthem is playing? You mutts seem to think they're is something wrong with his apparent uber-patriotism. There is not. Good on you Ashton. And good on you for marrying a nice Canadian girl too.
There isn't anything wrong with doing it. There also isn't anything wrong with not doing it.

nice few
I don't think you are the one to tell us what "respect" means.
While I abhor the vitriol directed towards Gabby Douglas, I also agree with the OP. It is technically in the US Flag Code
http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html
and it's good to see people following it.
The sad thing is that most of the uberpatriotic people are the ones who continually make a mockery of the Flag code (mostly by inappropriate use on clothing). Athletes with the Flag draped on them (and sometimes downright abused by them) are especially notable offenders.
Not that I really care all that much.
Many in my generation (gen X) were taught by our parents (baby boomers) that you put your hand over your heart for the pledge, but for the anthem you just stand and take your hat off. That is very clearly wrong if you check the US flag code. However since there is no penalty, these habits tend to get passed on from one generation to the next. Parents are not in the habit of checking US code before they teach etiquette. As for how the no-hand-over-heart thing got started, maybe a boomer can explain..
America is so stupid. OP probably voting for Trump as if he's gonna make America great, he's one of those that abuse the system. Biggest hypocrite out there.
Why? People love to complain.

I apologize sonny, I killed so many Nazis in WWII you'd think the autocorrect wouldn't get the best of me.
But seriously you're not making a trendy political statement by failing to properly address the Flag. You just look like a hipster that's happy to let other men and women provide him with security and freedom without being willing to show even a modicum of respect to them.
