She can't kick as well as others. So what's her race strategy?

Given her semifinal race, she probably thought she had a better 400m kick than everyone but Dibaba and Kipyegon. She did her best to stick with them from 800 out but just died. She raced for a medal but came up way short. Overestimated her own abilities. Happens to the best.
she should have just TT a 4:02.
I don't know why they don't do that. She would have had a 30 meter lead.
Pure and simple.

Yeah no way there would be 9+ people sitting on her shoulder at 1200ms to go.
Obviously leading is stupid. Running fast 100s and then slowing down might work. Do it right and you could cause a pile up that takes out 4 or 5 of the competitors. Unfortunately you are going to run the risk of being one of the casualties when you slam on the brakes.
Hasn't Laura won or placed well a fair number of times from front-running? I think that played a lot into her decisions during this race.
My mistake. Just realized you wrote "Why didn't" instead of "Why did."
I agree with you.
The only flaw which has costed her a possible medal was that segment from 800m to the bell lap.
Dibaba held her off as she wasted too much energy down the bend.
As a 3:57 runner she had a legitimate reason to trust her kick.
But she should have cranked up a couple 66 laps to string things out a bit, then hope someone took the lead and then sit on the shoulder of someone.
Of course it's not a guarantee someone else takes the lead after 800m.
Hard work following an athlete on EPO
Should she have taken it out against a 3:50 runner!.
She didn't actually have to push the pace, but she should never have stayed at the back of the pack with Dibaba. Her apparent tactic was to shadow Dibaba, but she doesn't have the wheels to do that. A brave but flawed tactic. It's not her style and she had a lot of ground to make up as compared with Simpson.
The point is that if Muir had taken the lead and run a 4:02 pace there WOULD have been at least 6 if not more runners off her shoulders. And then she wouldn't have been able to kick with any of them. Essentially the same result for a non-kicker in a major championship.

she might have...or she might have been able to grab 20 meters before anyone looked up. at the beginning of the race dibaba was in last place. If Muir had gone out hard dibaba would have had trouble catching her.
And muir has proven that she can drive herself hard while alone. If she isn't a kicker, her strategy of waiting for the kick was not wise. Race to your strength - her strength is the long hard drive.

You just stated Pre's strategy in '72. Long hard drive. The kickers were able to stay with him and pass him in the last lap. The same would have happened to Muir except maybe she would have placed a little higher but not medal. And you are saying that Dibaba who ran a 57 couldn't have caught up? It is to laugh.

the difference is that Muir is a superior runner to Pre - she ran 3:57 THIS YEAR. That is as good as anyone, given Dibaba's injury.
Sure dibaba probably would have caught her. But I think it still would have been a higher percentage bet for Muir, given what we know she can do in a long drive.
Stick to talking about politics.
She left the final at the semifinals.

The Pre analogy is a good one. It seems she decided gold or bust and went with superior athletes. Stupid strategy that cost her. I thought most runners grow out of that mentality in high school.
I did that once in high school against Rupp, thinking that my 16:00 5k shape could magically transform into state champ material. What a miserable experience. Sometimes you have to admit you are inferior and run within yourself, and sometimes someone dies and you pick up the pieces.

Fat-faced girls can't push the pace?
Muir should have done what Jager just did.
Jager knew he could run 8:00-8:10. So he went out and did it. No hiding in the pack, no sit and kcik.
Jager and Muir are similar - obviously medal candidates.
Muir tried to get all tricky - she should have just gone and aimed for 4 flat, like Jager aimed for 8:05.

She is one paced.
The race changes when you turn it into a 2 minute 800 m after a 700 m stride through.
Running steady would have made her the bunny.
