Had Galen actually trained for the 10k rather than marathon he could have won gold, bronze at a minimum. If he doesn't medal in the marathon, a huge tactical error by alsal, unfortunately. Too bad

He would have got 4th if he would have trained for just the 10K. His mistake was that he stopped taking the Salazar Sauce a few weeks too early.

Yeah, you're right.
I agree. Obviously he didn't have the kick the last 400 to go probably as a result of the marathon training. Hopefully this wasn't his main focus to medal
I agree that he could have grabbed a medal if he'd been focussing on the 10,000m, but let's wait and see how he does in the marathon before declaring this a tactical error.
Agreed as well. Easy race if you had the speed for the final 400. Hope Rupp is ready for the marathon.
I don't see how that strength hurt is 10,000 chances.
He can close in 55 but he wasn't strong enough to do that today.
I agree, though I doubt he could have won gold.
We will see what happens with the Marathon. But so far this is shaping up to be exactly what I feared for Rupp. By doing this double he has compromised his training in both events and risked not medaling in either event. It would actually have made me feel better for his chances in the marathon had he fallen off the pace late in the race and come in 8th. That would have told me he was focused on the marathon all along. Now he has to face veteran marathon runners who are totally focused on that event and who don't have to recover from a grueling 10K race.
Veteran marathon runners? They rarely show up in the Olympics.

Sure. But Rupp has never had the speed for the final 400m other than once. FWIW, I don't think it is speed. It is him being in say 26:55 shape compared to guys like Mo who are in 26:40 shape. A little bit more endurance results in much faster kicks at the end more so than dropping your 400m time from 50s to 49.
And without a clue how he trained, we have no clue about how that changed his fitness level.
He finished the same place as last WC in same type of race where he was only training for track. Now he has a chance to do well in marathon.

No. He's not sharp enough to close in 55 in that type of race right now.
Anyone know why he wore racing flats?
This seemed like an odd double to me from the beginning (assuming the goal was to medal in both).
Is it realistic in 2016 to medal in both the marathon and [insert any other event]?

Yeah just like he did in 2015.... Oh wait.
yeah, it seemed that way to you because every race is different. you didn't really think he was going to win silver in london and would have told us so if he was 5th. but on THAT day it worked out and he was 2nd. bottom line: you don't know anything except AFTER it happens. then you import your great insight AFTER the race. wow, you should have told Alberto and Galen how to train and it really would have made a difference. he didn't have it today, period. get over yourself

Yeah, that's life.
Could you have run any better? No. Could you have trained Rupp any better? No.
So just shut up.
On Rupps 2012 form they would have repeated as 1-2
10k was final speed workout.
No. Stop your useless 4 years ago shite. Rupp has not been 2nd, or 3rd since 2012 and he's trained for the 10,000 for three of the last four years. He and Farah began training together in Feb 2011. Rupp has moved to the marathon now because his window expired.
Rupp | Farah
2012 - 2nd 2012 - 1st
2013 - 4th 2013 - 1st
2015 - 5th 2015 - 1st
