Frank shorter 5th in the 10,000 in 72'...wins the marathon a week later. Hope rupp can do the same!

RUPP...
Fml autocorrect. Marathon could be interesting. Hopefully he won't regret not focusing on one race.
He was wearing racing flats (trainers?). Did that negatively affect his speed? Maybe he should've worn spikes.

Was that to protect his legs a little for the marathon? Why hedge like that?
This race told us nothing about Rupp's marathon potential. He could do anything. I will plump for a peak of 2:07 in a year or two. He looked comfy for most of this 10k race, but on tip-top form he would have medalled. He'll run 2:08 for 7th.

How many times have we told Alberto about the importance of finishing speed (e.g. Bernard Lagat 52.82 last 400m to win the Olympic trials 5k…when Galen's tape stuck to itself…and 8 people went past Galen)?
A lot of times.
This 5th place?!!! (Rupp boys predicted Gold !!! ha ha ha ha ha) result is caused of a lot of stupid ideas by Alberto all acting at the same time... which creates a debacle.
Mo is able to avoid the stupid ideas of Alberto by hiding from Alberto…and everyone ringing his non-ringing doorbell.

Rexing certified.
no he didn't. look at him with 500 to go. he's clearly exhausted and nothing left in the tank.

Did he look relaxed though?
I wonder if he cost himself another medal by just staying with the pack. Rupp seems very strong right now, but not as fast as 2012. If he would've taken the lead with 5 or 6 laps to go and pushed the pace he might've been able to get away from at least two of those who finished ahead of him. Farah still most likely wins and Tanui kicked well (though not unbelievably so), but the two Ethiopians were barely ahead of Rupp and I think he could've had them if he had pushed a little earlier.
Just read the Runner's World article talking about how Salazar had Rupp doing LESS weights after finishing a disappointing (for him) 5th last year in the WC
"Salazar explains that last summer, after Rupp’s disappointing performance at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, Salazar determined that the runner was carrying too much bulk and muscle in his upper body. “It was restricting his stride,†Salazar says. “He couldn’t achieve full extension. So we basically stopped doing upper-body strength work. Galen has gotten much more fluid, much more flexible.â€
“But he hasn’t lost any power,†McHenry is quick to add. “He’s actually attaining more forward thrust with each stride.â€"
Welp, guess that didn't work for the 10K. On to next Sunday and the 'thon.
Btw, 5th place in a WC or Olympics is still pretty damn amazing.
To those criticizing Rupp for "ONLY" finishing 5th in the 10,000, please feel free to post your medal position from a prior Olympic Games (not Junior or Special or AAU either) in the 10,000.meters. Oh, wait.

Same thought.
Rupp looked okay with about 250m to 300m left..then just fell off.
Oh well, he can still run a hell of a lot faster than of us!
Have you been watching the Worlds the last few years. It's like deja vu. I'm watching every year thinking, "He looks great he's going to medal and then with 300 to go it's instantly over."
The thing that shocked me is they said on NBC that Rupp recently ran his fastest 400 ever - a sub 50 in practice. And we're supposed to believe he's going to win the marathon?
Expect great things in the marathon
I remember someone else who finished 5th in the 10k, and then ran well in the marathon.

He's been training for the marathon and lost a bit of his finishing speed.
Thing about that...same result at worlds and he wasn't training for a marathon. London came right after they started their Farah/Rupp project. And it got Rupp a silver. Farah kept rolling and Rupp got used to 5th/6th place.
Dude, your grammar is poor. Also, why should Alberto Salazar listen to you? What elites are you currently coaching?

I was thinking something like this too.
I knew his closing speed wasn't up to par, I was expecting him to take the lead at some point as it was his only chance IMO.
Not hating though 5th is awesome!!! I'm still gunning for 5th at local amateur races lol.
Trashing Rupp after tonight is absurd.
He was right in it..and if he had old finishing speed from 4 years ago, would have medaled.
145 mile weeks, might make you look like that, without his old underside.
'
Look at rest of top five, this was a very representative race rom Rupp.A very honest to fast Olympic race at 10K.
take the lead? he was holding on.

Pretty sure they were racing flats with a spike plate...
Probably a precaution with the marathon in mind.
His post race workout is going to be ran on pure hate tonight.

Good post on an otherwise absurd thread.
Possible medal threat in the marathon, although I'll be cheering for the other guys.
