It's more like Rudisha pushed the others to a great time rather than being pushed to the WR... 0.8 second is still a lot in a 800m at the elite level.
Remember that splitting 400m at wr pace is relatively easy because of the positive split factor.
I don't think so, but is the other athlete in the frame Infeld--that is, is Huddle almost lapping her? I think so. If the case, what an irony a year later.

I'm starting to suspect Molly's really not very smart.
After last year's disastrous giving away of a World's medal (a once-in-a-lifetime chance), she's about to walk herself into another huge disaster.
She could've run 30:40 today, and maybe finished 5th or 7th, and it would've been a great performance.
Now, she's gonna crash to a 31:50, probably lose to Infeld again.
Incredibly dumb. Very sad.
Yeah okay... let's just all take a second to appreciate the stupidity of this post

The reason for this is it only uses VDOT to the 10th of a decimal place for the conversions -- for all intents and purposes, it's close enough, and makes the point, was this the greatest women's running performance ever? Looks like it converts to better than every WR on the books for women, including Paula's marathon WR.

But Ethiopia is facing a potential IAAF ban because their testing is so lax.
I'd bet Rojo's house that this ban never happens.
That Canada cap suits Ashton Eaton.
Amazed the announcers in the 10k did not mention the drug bust of the ethiopian coach.
Track is dead. Its a giant pharmacy.

An excellent performance is not evidence of doping.
mc_truth wrote:...My point is simply that one possible explanation for why we saw so many fast times today is that the circumstances (strength of field, conditions, pacing, peaking) were basically perfect for fast times. That is by no means proof that they are all clean, but it is an answer to the question "how is it possible that all of a sudden you see a WR and four sub-30s in one race?" that isn't "everyone is dirty."
The other thing is that the pace today was fast almost from the start. Early splits were right around 75, right? And all except 1 starter was in the bunch the first 800-1000. Then when it strung out you still had 8 runners cruising up front. I don't recall any slower laps early on. A lot of times even if races go out fast there will be a 3-4 lap period when splits are off a bit. Not today. By 2000m you knew there was no chance this was going to evolve into a kicker's race. This was pure time trialing and let's see who can hang. Nawowuna played a big role in that. It seemed like the Kenyan strategy, based on the positions the front 8 were running in, was for her to force the Ethiopians to over extend themselves early. It's just that the Ethiopians proved to be able to handle this kind of race.
The other thing I was thinking is that it's Day 1 of T&F. I would assume all these athletes are 100% tapered from any other racing they've done this summer. 37 starters. 18 Personal bests. Move the 10k to the end of the games after many of these women have run other races you don't get those kinds of performances.
Don't slander Ray Treacy and Huddle with loose and incomplete info. Treacy kicked Martin Fagan out of his group when he began suspecting that Fagan was doping. Fagan switched groups to Arizona and was later caught. Treacy despises dopers and won't associate w/them. Best recommendation of Huddle being clean is who her coach is.

Aden is not Ethiopian and he coaches just a single Ethiopian, I believe.
OMG - Nijel Amos is OUT in the first round! Devastating.
High floor.
A DOZEN RUNNERS IN THE WOMEN'S 5K were lapped TWICE!
Incredible HJ dual by Thiam and KJT, both cleared 1.98 which is the World Hep Best. Neither came particularly close at 2.01, but that was to be expected. I wouldn't be surprised at all if 1.98 wins the HJ gold medal this year.

T&F has zero credibility.
Let me guess, you were one of those kids who couldn't resist scratching mosquito bites and poison ivy, and could never remember to gently drop the bat on the way to first base. Why is it necessary to make such hyperbolic statements? What purpose does it serve? There are many people in this sport with amazing credibility. In my view, at the grass roots level especially, it is the world's most uplifting and diverse sport. We have a toxic problem with corruption at the top, but even at that level there are many athletes who are clean.

Thats why I use Jundo instead of vdot. Jundo uses 2 times (in this case 5k and 10k) and gives you much more realistic predicitons. Vdot is not a prediction, contrary to popular belief. It is simply a way of comparing times and saying X time is as good as Y
Jundo says much more realistic stuff. 4:02 1500, 8:20 3000
however, her 5k and 10k suggest 1:03:46 HM and 2:11:13 Marathon which interestingly enough is exactly galen rupp's time from oly trials
