His tibia would probably snap in half if he tried to run. Those swimmers are only impressive in anti gravity situations.
Bolt Yes. Phelps, are you kidding me? Phelps is 5:30 miler IMO.

I wouldn't be so sure. A freshman swimmer (14 years old) walked onto our HS track team this year and dropped a 2:02.75 800m off of no training. He's obviously talented as a runner and we don't know if Phelps is, but I wouldn't be so quick to discredit such an incredible athlete.
World class swimmers are freaks. Long arms and trunks. Relatively short legs.
If Phelps trained he could break 5, as most athletic young males can, but he would be average runner at best.

A skinny 125 pound 14 year old running 3 miles a day in the summer and biking 20 per day, can run a 5:30 time trial the first day of XC.
A mature, world class athlete, performing aerobics 6 hours per day over 15 years, might likely do a little better than 5:30.
How many 6'4", 200 pound dudes with size 14 feet break 5 for the mile? Most swimmers can't run, most runner's can't swim.
Is he related to Michael Phelps?
Phelps has INSANE endurance, he's a swimmer. He does what we do for the most part. Sure he isn't swimming the 1500 but he's not just a pure sprinter.
His stamina is enough to make up for the stubby legs.
Semi-related factoid: Katie Ledecky can't break 9:00 for a mile, running.

, around minute 5)
His legs are proportional to someone who is 5'4 - 5'5 and he has big clown feet with long gangly arms that dangle by his knees. Not suited to running. He'd struggle to break 7 mins.
my upperbody is slightly longer than my legs and i have ran a 4:01 1500m.
Here is an exerpt about Phelps from
"Even after swimming, Phelps’ lactate count was 5.6 (5.6 millimoles of lactate per liter of blood). How about other swimmers? Out of 5,000 other competitive swimmers being tested, all of them has level more than 10. In other words, the uncommon low number of lactate is so significant in Phelps’ body. His muscles recover faster than almost everyone after workout and race. This uniqueness has enabled him to compete so many events within such a short time, yet breaking records, one after another."
So to answer the question... Without training: no
With a tiny amount of training: EASILY
I recall 8+ years ago hearing that his coach stopped him from running on land as he was very akward and a risk to hurt himself.
That being said, he probably could break 5min but it would take some specific training because that boy is completely misshapened.
The wind resistance of his gangly, Mr. Ed style horse face would prevent it.

More of you think Phelps would break 5 than think Bolt would.
Classic.
Why do people think people cant break 5? From what I remember in highschool anyone who really put in effort for a few years broke five. Even the really unathletic kids. One kid from our team weighed over 230 pounds and a few years later broke 5.
No way. His mom wouldn't let him do it.
After a few weeks of easy miles and strides (to make sure his legs don;t break) i'd say give him a pacer and he'll do it.
you guys need to take into account that he is a huge competitor. He would make a sub 5:30. He is a gamer
Phelps --no doubt.
Bolt -- no chance.
