I'd like to only have to buy one pair of spikes for XC and track. Would it be better to wear track spikes for XC or XC spikes for track? I have been looking at the Nike zoom victory XC 3's and wondered if I could just put in blanks for cross country because I will mainly be running on gravel roads and packed dirt, and put in spikes for track?
If you want to use one pair of spikes for both, I would recommend track spikes, but you are doing it backwards. Wear a pair of spikes for indoor/outdoor track, and then wear them for cross to get one final season out of them. Depending on the types of courses you compete on, they should make it through the season fine, but they will definitely get beaten up.
If you are dead set on buying a new pair now and using them for both, get cross spikes. A good pair of cross spikes (like the vic xc 3) is hardly any heavier than most track spikes, and due to the materials of the outsole, should still be in good condition after racing September through November.
