I've been watching the Olympics and in swimming they call it a warmdown. What's with that?

Yes. I usually "coolup" and "warmdown" for races/workouts/etc.
I had a coach who said it. At the time I thought it sounded stupid. Come to think of it...I still do!
Well, the reality is, you were/are too stupid to simply ask why it is termed "warmdown"... congrats.
Warmdown is used due to the nature being similar as warmup... but, instead of preparing for activity, we are using slightly elevated HR through light and dynamic activity to produce a recovery/regeneration environment. To give another macro definition... expediting hormonal and nutrient shuttling.

My high school coach and team (100+ kids per year) say warmdown. So there's a lot of us out there who say warmdown. When I got to college I didn't know why people called it a cooldown...
I think the kids these days are using "turnt" for this. Turnt Up and Turnt Down.
A high school XC teammate of mine who was also a swimmer said warm down... apparently it's more of a swimmer thing. The rest of us said cool down.

I can confirm that this is accurate.

Swimmers pee in the pool, that's probably why

Coolup is used in this way - "Why don't you coolup like Flagpole?"
My college coach called it a warmdown, seemed weird at first but I got used to it. 20 years later I still call it a warmdown.
Never occurred to me that it would sound weird to others, I may have to switch to cooldown.
I've run many years.
Warmdown and cooldown are interchangeable in running.
It's not a swimming thing.
I mostly said warmdown myself.
Nikeman calls it a warm-down, but you have to pick your battles in a marriage.
"I'll have to warm down this soup before I can eat it."
"I hope the weather warms down soon! Sick of running in this heat!"
Yeah, I'm sticking with "cool down." One term to rule them all.
Everyone in the UK calls it a warmdown.
You got married?! Oh wow. Did you reinvent sex too?
I remember they used to call it that a long time ago. Guys like Marty Liquori would use that term.
I guess it kind of makes sense. You warm "up" first, then warm "down."
But really, no one uses it in running anymore (except the Brits, I guess).

I think this is the correct perspective on the debate. It should be cooldown, but not a huge deal using the less correct term.
If he uses the pretentious "kit" to describe a competition uniform, you might want to have a serious talk though.

He has, but I do call him out on that one.
I call it a warm down and I have a reason why...
You are doing activities that actually lead to warming up the muscle but at a lower intensity than prior in the work out. I move and warm down through this process.
Then afterwards I will get into the cold tank. This I call a cool down as the active element is cool.
