He has no medal chance. Probably not even in the 10000 if he didn't do the marathon.
Discus.

Yeah he has no chance in any event.
Why are you wasting your time thinking about Rupp? Why am I wasting my time? It's an infinite regress - be productive.

Well, if he has no chance in either event, even if he didn't do one of them, then he isn't exactly wasting his time, is he?
But, mainstream Americans care way more about the Marathon than they do about the 10,000m. Most Americans care about the 100-400m and the marathon, and nothing in between.
It would probably be more accurate to ask, "why is Rupp wasting his time with the 10,000m?" (to which the answer would be: it is a good speed workout for his upcoming marathon.)

He is wasting his time with both of them. He has no chance to medal in either.
Well, he is in the effing Olympics. What did YOU do today?

The question is like asking, "why do you run if you have little chance of winning an Olympic medal?"

Ad hominem. Completely irrelevant.

This. If a white american won the Boston Marathon the toothless, racist Bostonians would lose it and his value would skyrocket.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm for field events, I don't think discus is in Rupp's future. Maybe Ryan Hall.

Again, completely irrelevant. What most Americans care about has nothing to do with Rupp's decision about which event to run.

In case you are not aware, on LR, we misspell "discuss" on purpose.

Exactly. If he wants a medal, why doesn't he focus all his efforts on one event? Why spread yourself thin and decrease your chances in two events? Do you think his goal is "run my best"? His goal is to medal.
The reality for Rupp is: he is a father, he has a wife who wants him at home --not a Farah player--, he has kids he wants to spend time with. Running the 5k and 10k keep him on the track more, and in the grasp of Salazar. If he focuses--which I think is his plan--on the marathon he can do less track work, and do his long runs from closer to home. Less need to travel is another benefit of focusing on the marathon.

Is he focusing on the marathon? He's running the 10000 too. Has he just conceded the 10000 as no medal? Are they approaching the 10000 as a tune-up for the marathon?

I am enjoying the luxury of having time to waste. Productivity is of no concern at the moment.
I will answer the question. While Galen has no chance to medal, he is not aware of that. He knows he has no chance to medal at 5000m. He actually did medal at 10000m, even though he has no chance anymore. The marathon is a known unknown for Galen. Therefore, he rolls the dice in the known unknown as opposed to the known known (5000m). Got it?
He's running the short sprint marathon and full 'thon DOUBLE. Goal is DOUBLE GOLD.

There is nothing Zen about you.
