I graduated college in May and am looking to continue running competitively on the roads. I know of a few good local and national-level road races but am curious what are the best ones to do - not just where to chase fast times but also iconic races. A few that come to mind for me are:
-All the major marathons, obviously
-Peachtree
-Falmouth (not as much as it used to be, but still)
-Beach to Beacon 10K
-Bay to Breakers
What else am I missing?
Why are the major marathons an obvious choice? NYCM AND Boston are known to be logistical nightmares.
There are so many great races out there, it might be better to look for the best in a certain region.

5th Ave Mile
Manchester Road Race
Bolder Boulder 10k
Probably the two most iconic road races I've done, there are a bunch that are great and well established such as Berwick Run for Diamonds.

My favorite is the 4th of July run from Odell to Hood River in Oregon. Solid 100 people and $5 entry fee. Better know the way though, there's no direction arrows or mile markers.

The Virginia 10-Miler in Lynchburg- Used to be the site of some pretty amazing battles between the likes of Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter. Challenging course with a pretty legit hill with 1.5 miles to go.

I second this. The whole town comes out for the this race. They really cater to elites as well. the race is free for sub 33 10kers. Lots of cash time bonus'. I think its $10k if you break Rod Dixon's course record.
in terms of some good competition I'd include NYC Half, Rock n Roll Philly Half, possibly Brooklyn Half

I second the Bolder Boulder. (I preferred the old start, but the new one isn't bad.) The Chicago St Pat's race is pretty good. I'd stay away from anything Disney. I've heard that the Via Marathon is pretty easy "logistically." Stick with your local Turkey Trot though. Gotta remind everyone back home that you're still the man.
Wharf to wharf is a great race, bands are laid out through the course and if you get top 100 you a jacket.
5th Ave Mile is my favorite.
